European Covenant of Companies for Climate and Energy
THE CHALLENGE
Businesses have a fundamental responsibility to drive the energy transition and engage in climate action. However, the path to a low-carbon business is by no means a simple one. Those that do want to make a commitment often struggle with implementing these changes, and those who have done a good job at decarbonising their businesses would like to make it known that they’ve done so.
The Covenant of Companies is a recently launched initiative by the European Commission to encourage and support companies to step up their contribution to a clean energy transition and related climate objectives. The project was in a pilot phase for two years where concepts were developed and tested to establish a strong foundation for the Covenant of Companies.

LOW was working for DG ENER to help European businesses, in particular SMEs, decarbonise by providing practical, step-by-step guidelines and technical assistance to companies to help them take concrete action. The Covenant also recognised the steps taken by companies under the initiative with a ‘Seal of Approval’ awards scheme.
