Sue Bird
With the European Commission for more than 30 years, Sue led on initiatives in regional policy, industry policy, research and development, information society, and employment and social affairs. Until recently, she was a Policy Coordinator/Officer in the Commission's DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, where she was in charge of co-organising a European Vocational Skills Week, including a major communications campaign.
Prior to that she managed Corporate Social Responsibility policy and relations with the private sector for DG EMPL. In this role, she played a key part in the development of the 2011 European Commission Communication on CSR. Before this, she oversaw the Commission's Structural funding (economic development aid) for Slovakia for 2004-2006, and held a cross-cutting role in the Telematics Applications Programme for research and development in public sector information society initiatives.
In her non-professional space, Sue founded and supported an HIV testing and counselling, education and community development centre in Malawi, the operations of which she now oversees with her UK-based partner charity.
